On July 6th, 2013, Jon David Bruning was floating the Elk River in Missouri with some friends. In an instant, a good time turned into a nightmare. While diving off a low bridge into unexpectedly shallow water, his head struck rocks on the bottom of the river causing extensive damage to the C5 and C6 vertebrae in his neck/back. After being medevac’d to a hospital in Joplin, he was then flown to UAMS in Little Rock where he underwent surgery to stabilize and correct his spine. He is currently paralyzed from the chest down and dealing with several difficulties related to the injury including infections and respiratory issues. Following a short recovery in the UAMS ICU, he was moved to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia, where he will remain for the duration of his recovery and the extent of his rehabilitation (anywhere from 3 months to 1 year). Shepherd Center, in Atlanta, is one of the top rehabilitation hospitals in the nation, specializing in medical treatment, research and rehabilitation for people with spinal cord injury or brain injury. (www.shepherd.org) The expenses related to such an injury are overwhelming and the Bruning’s will need tremendous support, both emotionally and financially. JD’s mom, Jacki, is staying in Atlanta and may have to eventually rent a place to stay there. The family is also incurring a great deal of expenses making the trip from Arkansas to Atlanta on a regular basis. JD Bruning and his family are friends to many “families” including their hometown, Maumelle, their church, First Methodist Church in Maumelle and the Arkansas Baptist School family. While in school at Arkansas Baptist, JD excelled as an athlete and his parents were active volunteers for many years, even after their boys had graduated. JD’s extended family also includes his many friends he made at the U of A in Fayetteville. You may recall that Jacki organized a Christmas surprise the last two Christmases for the Veterans at Fort Roots. Her efforts led to a truckload of gift bags for the Vets last year. Reluctantly, Dave even dressed up as Santa Claus. This allowed a lot of forgotten Vets to have a brighter and merrier Christmas. That’s the kind of people the Brunings are. We need the support of all these communities to help the family as they face months of rehabilitation and the eventual long-term care of JD back home in Arkansas. Their need will be tremendous and ongoing. The outpouring of love and support for JD from family, friends, acquaintances and even strangers has been extraordinary and a true testament to the type of young man Jon David has grown to be. Now it is time give our help and support to a family who has given much to their community and schools.
As an employee of CBRE|Northwest Arkansas in Fayetteville, JD has quickly become an important part of a team that has been responsible for representing investors and tenants in many of the most significant commercial real estate transactions in Northwest Arkansas. His work ethic and positive attitude combined with his ability to learn quickly and his desire to understand the concepts that are relevant to marketing commercial real estate have made him a valued employee. His contributions to our business have been important but the friendship that JD formed with his co-workers has been the most significant result of his time with the company. We at CBRE all greatly miss JD’s presence and we are looking forward to the day that he is able to return to work and continue on the path to becoming an important part of the growth of our company and the commercial real estate industry in Northwest Arkansas.
